Group Airport Runs: When an 8-Seater Beats Two Separate Cars
Two families, one flight, and the annual argument about who rides where. Why a single 8-seater usually wins on price, timing and sanity.
Published 3 November 2026 by Soton Cars, Southampton. Fares and times in this guide are drawn from our published fare table.
One Car, Eight People, No One Left Behind
Every summer we watch the same scene play out. Two families heading for the same flight book two saloon cars, one arrives at the airport twenty minutes after the other, and the group chat spends the journey arguing about who has the passports. There is a simpler vehicle for the job. Our 8-seater carries up to eight passengers and their luggage in one car, on one booking, at one fare.
This guide sets out when the 8-seater wins, when it does not, and what it costs, including the Southampton Airport service from £40 that makes it the natural choice for group runs to the local airport.
When One Vehicle Wins
The maths is only part of it. One fare for one car is usually kinder than two fares for two cars, but the real gains are operational: everyone leaves at the same time, arrives at the same terminal door, and nobody's holiday starts with a phone call that begins with the words where are you. On the way home it matters even more. One flight, one landing time, one car waiting, and the whole group is on the road together while other parties are still negotiating with a second driver.
- One booking, one pickup time, one fare agreed before you travel
- Up to eight passengers travelling together, with their luggage in the same vehicle
- One flight to track and one driver waiting, not two cars to coordinate
- Better for cruise groups too: one run to the terminal with everyone's cases aboard
Space, Seats and Luggage
The 8-seater is a proper minivan, not a car with optimistic seating. Eight passengers ride in real seats with room to breathe, and there is a luggage area sized for group travel: eight people's airport cases fit, though eight people with eight enormous cruise cases is a conversation worth having at booking so we can plan the load. Tell us the case count honestly and we will tell you honestly whether it works.
Child seats are available on request, which makes the vehicle a favourite for the multi-generation airport run: grandparents, parents, children and the pushchair, all in one car, nobody driving themselves home tired after a night flight. That last point is worth more than it sounds. The most dangerous part of many holidays is the drive home from the airport at the end of it.
Airport Runs in the 8-Seater
For Southampton Airport, the 8-seater service starts from £40, which for a group of seven or eight works out at a price per head no train or pair of saloons gets near. The same flight tracking and free waiting that cover every airport pickup apply here too: 30 minutes included after landing at Southampton Airport, 60 at the London airports and the other major airports we serve.
For Heathrow, Gatwick and the rest, group fares are priced from the same published fare table as every other vehicle, confirmed when you book. If your group flies at an unsociable hour, that is fine: the service runs 24 hours a day, and group pickups in the small hours are some of the smoothest runs we do.
| Group airport run | Detail |
|---|---|
| Southampton Airport in the 8-seater | from £40 for the vehicle |
| Passengers | Up to 8, plus luggage |
| Free waiting at Southampton Airport | 30 minutes after landing |
| Free waiting at other airports | 60 minutes after landing |
| Groups of 9 to 16 | By phone or email booking only |
Bigger Than Eight?
Groups of 9 to 16 travel too, in a larger minibus, but those bookings are made by phone or email only and no fare is published for them, because the right vehicle depends on the group, the luggage and the journey. Call 02380 333 000 or email bookings@sotoncars.co.uk with your numbers and dates, and we will put a confirmed price on the right vehicle.
The same applies to split groups, wedding parties and sports teams with kit. One conversation, one plan, and vehicles that turn up together rather than eventually.
