Minibus Hire in Southampton: Groups of 5 to 16, Luggage and Honest Sizing
Five people or fifteen, the sizing question decides whether group travel is comfortable or a squeeze. How our minibuses and MPVs break down, what the airport runs cost, and the honest way to book for 9 to 16.
Published 3 November 2026 by Soton Cars, Southampton. Fares and times in this guide are drawn from our published fare table.
Moving a Group, Without the Second Car
Group travel fails in predictable ways. The vehicle is booked for the headcount and not the luggage. Two cars are ordered when one bigger one would have done. Or the group of twelve discovers, at the point of booking, that nobody publishes a price for them. This guide covers how our group vehicles actually size up, from five passengers to sixteen, with the airport fares we publish and the honest route to booking the bigger end.
The shape of the fleet is simple. MPVs carry five to six passengers with a proper luggage load. The 8-seater minivan takes up to eight people and their cases in one vehicle. And groups of 9 to 16 travel in a larger minibus, booked by phone or email only, because the right vehicle depends on the group and the journey.
Honest Sizing: People and Luggage Together
Book for the luggage, not just the people. Six passengers with six airport cases is not an MPV journey however the seat count reads, and eight people with eight cruise cases deserves a conversation at booking so we can plan the load. The table below is the sizing we work to, and if your group sits on a boundary, tell us the case count and we will give you a straight answer about which vehicle keeps everyone comfortable.
The other sizing trap is the split group: two households, two pickup addresses, one flight. That works well in one vehicle with two pickups priced into the quote, and it keeps the whole party on the same timetable, which on airport day is worth more than the small saving of coordinating two cars.
| Vehicle | Passengers | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| MPV | 5 to 6 | Families and small groups with luggage |
| 8-seater minivan | Up to 8 | Group airport runs, cruise parties, nights out |
| Larger minibus | 9 to 16 | Teams, wedding parties, big group days out |
Groups of 9 to 16 are booked by phone or email only, and no fare is published for that size: the price is confirmed in the conversation.
Group Airport Runs and What They Cost
Airports are where minibuses earn their keep. Southampton Airport is the simple case: an MPV starts from £25 and the minibus range from £40 for the vehicle, so a group of seven or eight travels for a per-head figure no pair of saloons gets near. Heathrow in the MPV starts from £140 and in the minibus from £170, priced from the same published fare table as every other vehicle, and confirmed when you book.
Everything that applies to a solo airport run applies to the group: flight tracking on arrivals, free waiting after landing (30 minutes at Southampton Airport, 60 at Heathrow and the other major airports), and help with the wall of luggage that groups produce. One flight, one landing, one vehicle waiting: the group lands, loads and leaves together.
- Southampton Airport: MPV from £25, minibus from £40, per vehicle
- Heathrow: MPV from £140, minibus from £170, from the published table
- One booking and one fare for the whole group, confirmed before travel
- Child seats available on request for the younger passengers
Occasions: Weddings, Matchdays and Days Out
Away from the airports, group bookings follow the calendar. Wedding parties moving between venue, church and hotel, in vehicles coordinated so the shuttles run in the right order. Sports teams and supporters heading to fixtures with kit that no saloon boot would accept. Works parties, race days, and the Totton, Hedge End and Hampshire-wide nights out where the group is bigger than any one car and nobody wants to be the driver.
For these journeys the fare is quoted on the plan rather than read off a table: the addresses, the timings and whether the driver waits or returns shape the price. One conversation produces one confirmed figure and a plan the whole group can rely on.
Booking for 9 to 16, and Why It Is Done by Phone
Groups of 9 to 16 are booked by phone on 02380 333 000 or by email at bookings@sotoncars.co.uk, and deliberately not online. The right vehicle for fourteen people with airport luggage is a different answer from fourteen people going across town, and a two minute conversation settles questions a booking form would fumble: pickups, case counts, child seats, return timings. In return you get a confirmed price for the right vehicle, not a published fare that was never going to fit your group.
Book group travel as early as you reasonably can. Summer weekends, cruise days and the football calendar take the larger vehicles first, and the groups who plan ahead are the ones travelling together.
