Southampton to London City Airport Taxi: The Docklands Run

The business traveller's airport: one small terminal in the Royal Docks, a straight run up the M3, M25 and A13, and pickups that take minutes, not half an hour.

Southampton to London City, The Docklands Run

London City is the airport Southampton's business travellers quietly prefer. It sits in the Royal Docks in east London, flies to UK and European business destinations, and does everything at a smaller scale than Heathrow or Gatwick: one compact terminal, short walks, and an arrivals hall you can cross in a couple of minutes.

The trade-off is the drive. At around 90 road miles via the M3, M25 and A13, it is one of our longer London runs, and Docklands traffic is the variable that decides your morning. This guide covers what it costs, how long it really takes, and how we plan around the east London end of the journey.

What the Journey Costs

The fare is per car, not per person, and it is agreed with you before you travel. A saloon from Southampton to London City Airport starts from £195, an MPV from £220 and the minibus range from £245, all from the same published fare table as every other airport we serve. There is no meter and no surge pricing, so congestion on the A13 is our problem to absorb, not an extra line on your bill.

The same starting fare applies in both directions, and a return can be arranged in the same conversation.

Why Fly From London City at All

For the right trip, London City earns its longer drive. The terminal is small and efficient, close to the City and Canary Wharf, so a traveller heading for east London's business districts can be off the plane and in a meeting faster than from any other London airport. Check-in and security move quickly at this scale, and arrivals is a short walk rather than a terminal trek.

It suits the pattern of business travel: out on an early flight, back the same evening or the next day, hand luggage only. Door to door matters on days like that. A car collects you from home, puts you at the departures door, and is the simplest part of the return, when the alternative is a Docklands light railway ride and two changes with a bag and a long day behind you.

The Route: M3, M25, A13 and the Docklands Variable

The first two thirds of the run are familiar: M3 to the M25, then east and down towards the river. It is the last stretch, along the A13 into the Royal Docks, where the journey is made or lost. Docklands traffic builds early and clears late, and an accident on the A13 ripples backwards quickly. None of that is a reason to avoid the airport; it is a reason to leave with a real margin, and to tell us your flight time so we set the pickup around the roads, not around optimism.

For arrivals we track your flight, so the car is timed to your actual landing. Meet and greet inside the terminal is available on request, with your driver waiting in arrivals with a name board. Otherwise we agree the meeting point by phone once you are through, and a compact airport means that walk is measured in minutes.

  • Tell us your flight number when you book and we track the flight ourselves
  • For morning departures out of London City, we agree a pickup with Docklands traffic priced in
  • 60 minutes of free waiting on arrivals starts when your flight lands, not when it was due
  • Child seats are available on request, just mention ages when you book

Booking, and What Is Included

Book by phone on 02380 333 000, online, or by WhatsApp, at any hour. We will need your pickup address and your flight details, and the fare is confirmed before you travel, starting from the published prices. Included as standard: flight tracking on arrivals, 60 minutes of free waiting after landing, and help with your luggage at the car.

A return booking made in the same conversation is the pattern most London City travellers settle into: out early, back late, one firm handling both ends, and a driver who knows the Docklands run well enough to have a plan B when the A13 misbehaves.
