London to Southampton Cruise Port: Transfer Options, Times and Fares
Arriving in London and sailing from Southampton? The honest comparison of transfer options, what the private car costs and takes, and how to time the run to the ship.
Published 3 November 2026 by Soton Cars, Southampton. Fares and times in this guide are drawn from our published fare table.
London to the Ship, Sorted Properly
A large share of the passengers boarding ships at Southampton start their journey nowhere near the port. They land at Heathrow or Gatwick, or stay a night or two in London first, and then face the question this guide answers: what is the best way to get from London to the Southampton cruise port, with cruise luggage, on a schedule set by a ship that will not wait?
You have four realistic options: the train to Southampton Central and a short taxi from the station, a coach, a shared shuttle, or a private transfer that collects you from your hotel or terminal and delivers you to the ship's doors. Each has its place. This guide prices and times the private car properly, and is honest about where the train wins.
The Options, Honestly Compared
The train is the strongest rival. London Waterloo to Southampton Central takes around an hour and a quarter, and from the station the cruise terminals are a short taxi ride. For one or two travellers with a case each, travelling in daylight, it is hard to beat on price. Its weaknesses are the joins: getting to Waterloo with luggage, the change of vehicle at the Southampton end, and the fact that a cancelled train on sailing day is your problem to solve.
Coaches and shared shuttles sit in the middle: cheaper than a private car, slower, and built around other people's schedules. The private transfer removes the joins entirely. Your driver collects you from the airport arrivals hall or your hotel door, loads the cruise luggage once, and drives to the terminal your ship is using. For families, groups, anyone with mobility needs, and anyone whose flight lands on sailing day, that simplicity is the product.
- Train: best on price for one or two light travellers, with a change at Southampton Central
- Coach or shuttle: mid-priced, fixed schedules, shared with other passengers
- Private transfer: door to terminal, luggage loaded once, timed around your ship
- Flying in on sailing day? The private car is the only option that tracks your flight
Times and Through Fares from London Airports
From Heathrow, the drive to the port takes between 1 hour 15 minutes and 1 hour 45 minutes in normal traffic, the same run our Heathrow guide covers in detail. From Gatwick, allow between 1 hour 30 minutes and 2 hours. From central London itself, plan on around two hours or more depending on where you start and the time of day, and we will agree a pickup time that works backwards from your check-in window.
The through fly-cruise fares are published: transfers from Heathrow to the cruise terminals start from £130, and from Gatwick from £160, per car rather than per person, confirmed before you travel. A car from Heathrow Terminal 5, where many transatlantic flights land, is the same booking: tell us the terminal and flight number, the driver tracks the flight, and 60 minutes of free waiting after landing is included.
| Starting point | To the cruise terminals | Journey time |
|---|---|---|
| Heathrow Airport | from £130 | 1h 15m to 1h 45m |
| Gatwick Airport | from £160 | 1h 30m to 2h |
| Central London | Confirmed at booking | Around 2 hours or more |
Per car, confirmed before travel. The terminal set fares (£20 and £25) apply to transfers within Southampton itself.
Travelling with Children and Cruise Luggage
The question behind many of these bookings is a family one: children, a pushchair, and two weeks of luggage, facing a rail journey with changes. In the car it is simpler. Child seats are available on request, just tell us the children's ages when you book, and the seats are fitted before the car arrives. An MPV or the 8-seater swallows the cases, and the children travel in one vehicle from door to dock without a platform change anywhere.
Cruise luggage deserves respect in the planning. Formal nights and two weeks of clothing produce cases a flight would never see. Tell us the case count when you book and we will send the vehicle that fits them, so the holiday starts with the boot closing, not with a negotiation on the pavement.
Timing the Day, and Booking
Work backwards from the ship. Your check-in window is in your sailing documents; aim to arrive at the terminal in its earlier half, then take off the drive, then a buffer for the M25 or the M3 on a busy day. If you are flying in that morning, tell us the flight details and we will say plainly whether the connection is comfortable or tight, before you commit to it.
Book by phone on 02380 333 000, online, or by WhatsApp, and book the return at the same time: when the cruise ends we will be at the terminal for your disembarkation group, heading back to London or the airport. One booking, both directions, and a number to call if the ship's timings move.
