Southampton Central Station Taxis: Ranks, Pre-Booking and Onward Journeys
Trains in, ships out, and everything in between: how taxis work at Southampton Central, from the rank outside the station to a pre-booked car waiting for your train.

Off the Train, Into the Car
Southampton Central is where the city's journeys change mode: off the train from London, Winchester or the coast, and onward to the cruise terminals, the hospitals, the universities or simply home. Taxis do a lot of that changeover work, and arriving travellers tend to ask the same three questions: where is the rank, what does the run to the docks cost, and is it worth booking ahead?
The short answers are these. The rank sits outside the station's main entrance on the city centre side. Transfers from the station to the cruise terminals carry the same set fares as any journey within Southampton: £20 for the car to City, Horizon and Mayflower terminals, £25 to Ocean and QEII. And on a sailing day, or when a London train has just emptied onto the platform, a pre-booked car beats the queue every time.
The Rank, and How It Works
The station has two entrances. The main one faces the city centre and West Quay, and that is where the taxi rank is: step out of the doors and the cars are in front of you. The second entrance, on the Blechynden Terrace side, serves the north side of the tracks and the residential streets beyond. If you are being collected, be clear about which side you mean, because the two exits are a footbridge apart and drivers meet passengers on both.
At quiet times a car is usually waiting and the whole changeover takes a minute. The pressure points are predictable: the morning and evening rush, the minutes after a London train arrives, matchdays at St Mary's, and late morning on days when several ships are boarding. At those moments the rank empties as fast as it fills, and the travellers standing in line with cruise cases are the ones who wish they had booked.
- The rank is outside the main, city centre side entrance
- The Blechynden Terrace entrance serves the north side of the station
- Busiest moments: rush hours, London arrivals, matchdays and multi-ship sailing days
- A pre-booked car waits at the exit you agree, rather than in the rank queue
Pre-Booking: The Car That Is Already There
Booking ahead turns the station leg into the calmest part of the journey. Give us your train and its arrival time, tell us which entrance you will come out of, and your driver is there when you step outside, with your name known and the route already planned. There is no queue, no debate about which car is yours, and no wrestling a fortnight of cruise luggage towards a rank that has just emptied.
Trains run late, and that is manageable too. Keep your phone on, let us know if your arrival time moves, and we will move the pickup with it. The same arrangement works in reverse at the end of a trip: a car booked from your end point back to the station, timed to your train with the traffic allowed for, so the connection is never the anxious part.
Onward Journeys From the Station
Most station journeys are short and set-piece. The cruise terminals are the headline run, priced at the set fares below. Southampton General Hospital is a few minutes up the hill on Tremona Road. The University of Southampton's Highfield Campus is a short run north, Solent University is in the city centre itself, and the airport is close enough that many travellers skip the one-stop train hop and take a car door to door, especially with luggage.
| From Southampton Central to | Fare for the car |
|---|---|
| City, Horizon or Mayflower Cruise Terminal | £20 set fare |
| Ocean or QEII Cruise Terminal | £25 set fare |
| Southampton Airport | from £15 |
| Cruise terminals from anywhere in Southampton | Same set fares apply |
Set fares cover transfers within Southampton, per car, agreed when you book. Other station journeys start from the published local fares and are confirmed at booking.
Sailing Day at the Station
On a big sailing day the station runs to the port's timetable. Trains arrive through the late morning full of passengers and cases, all heading for the same five terminals, and the station to ship leg is the one part of their journey they have not planned. Our advice is plain: book the car when you book the train, tell us the ship's name, and we will match the run to your terminal and check-in window, with the set fare agreed before you travel.
Coming home has the same shape in reverse. Ships dock early, disembarkation runs in groups, and a pre-booked car from the terminal to the station removes the last scramble of the holiday. Book the return when you book the outbound run, and both ends of the railway journey are covered.
