University Journeys in Southampton: Term Starts, Open Days and Airport Runs
Two universities, three terms a year and a mountain of luggage at both ends of each: the student journeys we run most, from moving day to the last run home.

Student Journeys, Term by Term
Southampton is a two-university city. The University of Southampton spreads across Highfield and the Avenue Campus, with halls from Glen Eyre and Bassett out to Wessex Lane; Solent University sits in the city centre. Between them they generate a rhythm of journeys we know by heart: the September move-in, the open day visit, the end of term airport run, and the late night ride home that nobody planned in freshers week.
We run student journeys for both universities all year, same-day and pre-booked, with student rates on airport, moving day and late night journeys. This guide walks through the runs that come up most, and how to book the right car for each, including the ones carrying more luggage than the student admits to owning.
Moving In and Moving Out
Moving day is a luggage problem before it is a people problem. The standard student load, cases, bedding, a kettle, three years of accumulated everything by the final year, does not fit a saloon alongside its owner. Book the vehicle for the boxes: an MPV or a minibus swallows the load in one trip, and where there is more than one trip in it, multiple runs can be arranged on the same booking. We do moving day work across every hall and student street in the city, at both ends of the academic year and everywhere in between.
Parents booking for a son or daughter can set the whole thing up in advance: the pickup, the hall, the timing around key collection. It is the version of moving day where nobody is standing on a pavement in Portswood surrounded by bin bags, wondering what happens next.
Open Days, Visits and Graduation
Before the terms start, the visits do. Families arrive at Southampton Central or the airport for open days and applicant days, often seeing the city for the first time, and the runs are simple ones done well: station to Highfield, a pause while you look around, and back again with time in hand. Parents visiting during term, and families gathering for graduation, use the same pattern, and graduation week in particular rewards booking ahead.
Airport Runs for Students
Term ends empty the city towards two airports. Southampton Airport is the close one, 10 to 15 minutes from the city centre with fares starting from £15, and the natural choice for flights home within the UK and Ireland. International students head for Heathrow at the end of term, from £110 for the car. That fare is per car, not per person, which changes the student maths completely: three or four friends travelling together split one fare between them, with everyone's cases in the boot.
Book the return at the same time and the January or Easter arrival is covered too: flight tracking, free waiting after landing, and a driver who knows which hall or student street you mean without a lecture on Southampton geography.
Late Nights and Everyday Term Time
Term time has its own transport needs: the late night journey home that nobody wants to walk, placement runs to Southampton General for nursing and medical students at hours when the buses are thin, supermarket expeditions that end with more bags than arms, and part-time job commutes across town. Same-day bookings are taken whenever a car is free, and pre-booking is there whenever the journey matters.
Student rates apply on the airport, moving day and late night journeys; to have one applied, contact us with your student email address when you book. Colleges across the city are covered on the same basis as the two universities.
