Southampton Taxi Fares Explained: How Prices Are Set Before You Travel
No meter, no surge, nothing added at the destination. How Soton Cars fares are built, what changes them, and how to get your exact price confirmed before you commit to anything.
Published 3 November 2026 by Soton Cars, Southampton. Fares and times in this guide are drawn from our published fare table.
How Your Fare Is Set, Before You Travel
Taxi prices have a reputation problem, and the industry earned it: meters ticking in traffic, quotes that drift between the phone call and the front door, surge pricing that punishes you for travelling when everyone else does. This page explains how our fares work instead, in plain terms, so you can check every figure we quote against the published table it came from.
The system has three rules. Fares are priced per vehicle, not per person. They start from the published prices on our fares page. And the exact fare for your journey is confirmed before you travel, when you book, so the number you agree is the number you pay.
Starting Fares: What the Table Means
Every airport fare we offer is published as a starting fare for a saloon car from Southampton. Starting from means the floor, not a teaser: the exact fare depends on where in the Southampton area we collect you and, at the big airports, which terminal you use. A pickup in Shirley heading to Heathrow sits at the £110 starting point; a pickup at the far edge of our coverage may sit a little above it, and you will know which before you travel, not after.
The table below is the whole airport picture in one place. Journey times are the ranges we plan around in normal traffic, and the waiting column is what an arrival pickup includes after your flight lands, at no extra charge.
| Airport | From (saloon) | Journey time | Free waiting on arrivals |
|---|---|---|---|
| Southampton (SOU) | from £15 | 10 to 15 minutes | 30 minutes |
| Heathrow (LHR) | from £110 | 1h 15m to 1h 45m | 60 minutes |
| Gatwick (LGW) | from £140 | 1h 30m to 2h | 60 minutes |
| Bournemouth (BOH) | from £60 | 50 to 75 minutes | 45 minutes |
| Luton (LTN) | from £180 | 1h 45m to 2h 15m | 60 minutes |
| Stansted (STN) | from £210 | 2h 15m to 2h 45m | 60 minutes |
| London City (LCY) | from £195 | 2h 15m to 2h 45m | 60 minutes |
| Bristol (BRS) | from £190 | 1h 30m to 1h 45m | 60 minutes |
| Birmingham (BHX) | from £220 | 2h 20m to 2h 30m | 60 minutes |
One way, per vehicle, confirmed at booking. Local journeys around Southampton are quoted and confirmed the same way when you book.
The Cruise Terminals: Set Fares
One part of the fare table works differently. Transfers to the cruise terminals from within Southampton carry a set fare for the car: £20 to City, Horizon and Mayflower terminals, and £25 to Ocean and QEII. Set means set: that is the fare for the journey, agreed when you book, covering the car and everyone in it. Journeys to the terminals from further afield, including the fly-cruise runs from London airports, are priced from the published table in the same way as the airport fares above.
What Changes the Price
Four things move a fare off its starting point, and none of them should surprise you. The vehicle: an MPV or an 8-seater costs more than a saloon, priced from the same table. The pickup point: the starting fare assumes a Southampton pickup, and addresses at the edge of our area can sit slightly above it. The journey itself: a second pickup or a stop on the way is priced into the quote when you book. And special requirements: wheelchair accessible journeys are priced on the specific set-up you need, and groups of 9 to 16 are quoted individually by phone or email because the right vehicle depends on the group.
What never changes the price: the traffic on the day, the time your delayed flight eventually lands inside the included waiting, and demand. There is no surge pricing at busy times, and no meter running while you sit in a queue on the M27. If the roads are slow, that is our cost, not yours.
- Per vehicle, never per person, and never per bag
- Exact fare confirmed when you book, before you travel
- No surge pricing, no meter, no charge for traffic delays
- Free waiting on arrival pickups: 30 minutes at Southampton Airport, 45 at Bournemouth, 60 elsewhere
- Accessible journeys and groups of 9 to 16 are quoted on your requirements
A Word About Cheap
Plenty of people search for a cheap taxi in Southampton, and fairly enough. Our honest answer is that we do not claim to be the lowest price in the city, and you should be wary of any firm that builds its whole offer on that claim. What we publish is a fare you can verify: the starting prices are on the website, the exact figure is confirmed before you travel, and the service behind it, flight tracking, included waiting, help with your luggage, is rated 4.8 from 217 Google reviews.
Compare like with like when you price a journey: per car against per person, door to door against a station change, the fare alone against the fare plus parking. Then call 02380 333 000, tell us the journey, and we will confirm the exact price before you commit to anything. That confirmation, not a headline number, is the thing worth shopping for.
